America must now focus on future

America must now focus on future

Barack Obama has become the first black president in our country's history. Forgive me for saying this, but it doesn't impress me. I can honestly tell you that electing a black man president isn't that big of a deal - it's way overdue.

To me, the bigger deal is how much our country has changed in the past 55 years.

Obama's Victory is Republican Party's Master Plan?

Ticker, CUNY Baruch College, NY

1 hour ago by Yelena Khvatskaya

The recent presidential election has been talked about to death. However, I need to express how wronged I feel as a Republican. What options do the Republicans have four years from now? Should the red states secede? We could call it "The Market Shall Overcome" States of America.

English Majors Have Major Problems Sending E-mails

If you have been receiving an influx of pointless e-mails, people trying to schedule appointments with their advisor, requests for this class at this time and stupid arguments, then you must be an English major.

For those non-English majors who do not know what I am talking about, let me fill you in.

More open gates at night would increase security

The Torch Online, Saint John's University New York, NY

Public safety's policies and officers are intended to help the student body become more comfortable with their surroundings after moving here. But some of those policies continue to stir up heated debates from students, especially the issue of the late-night gate openings.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, one day after Veterans Day, international pranksters known as "The Yes-Men" funded and recruited volunteers online to distribute thousands of free copies of a spoof edition of The New York Times at busy subway stations around the city.

Racism still major issue after Obama elected

Acorn, Drew University, NJ

The election is over and Barack Obama is the president-elect. No matter which party one subscribes to, the fate of our country seemed to depend on the outcome of this election.

Our economy is in the worst condition it has been in many years, the current president has record-low approval ratings, foreign opinion of America is abysmal and globalization has changed the world's commerce.

Obama must avoid a Carter-like repeat, hope for a Clinton-like term

The Quad News, Quinnipiac University, CT

1 day ago by Sam Friedman

Around 11 p.m. on Nov. 4, the news networks projected that with wins in California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington, Democratic nominee Barack Obama had not only won the election, but would become the first minority president in America's history (barring any unforeseen tragedies).

R.I.P. GOP?

I'd like to take a moment to offer my thoughts and prayers in remembrance of the Republican Party (1980-2008). Of course the party lives on, in name, but the events of Nov. 4 were the final nail in the coffin of the American conservative movement as we knew it.

"If we just have some faith, we're all amazing"

The Quad News, Quinnipiac University, CT

"You are amazing." That was the theme of Justin Fatica's talk last Wednesday night in a packed cafeteria. We are all amazing. We all need to love each other.

Pretty basic, right? It's nothing we haven't heard before.

However, as the founder of a ministry called Hard as Nails, Fatica has a way of making that point with a bit more clarity.

Obama's Postive Progressive Tax Plan

Statesman, SUNY Stony Brook, NY

2 days ago by Joseph Labriola

If you want to talk taxes and debate the point and purpose of them, than you have to consider the point and purpose of government. From these considerations, the following questions naturally arise: Why do we bother having a governing body that collects money? What should government be able to spend that money on? Shouldn't people be able to spend what they've earned directly on what they themselves deem valuable, without the government middleman?

These are all good questions and they all have good answers.

Looking Past the Lies of Obama's Tax Plan

Statesman, SUNY Stony Brook, NY

2 days ago by Zachary Kurtz

Obama is famous for selling himself as friendly to families in the working-class tax brackets. His oft-quoted line is, of course, that he's going to offer a tax cut for 95 percent of American workers and their families. This figure is challenged by the Tax Policy Center, which critiqued the details of Obama plan and concluded that this number would be closer to 81 percent of households that would see a tax decrease and 10 percent would see a tax hike.

MTA disregards student safety

Thousands of Baruch students pour across the 24th St. and 25th St. intersections on Lexington Avenue at their own risk.

Since New York University opened their dorms right around the corner from Baruch College, their buses made crossing the intersection treacherous as they whip around corners haphazardly.

Lack of 'fair' Career Fair

~The Chronicle, Hofstra University, NY

The Career Center at the University provides its students with many opportunities to attend career fairs as well as many chances to have one's resume critiqued and interview guidance. Even though all of this sounds great and seems like it would be very helpful, it isn't always that way.

While the nation chose a Democratic president, the conservative voice remained strong as states passed bans on gay marriage and adoptions by unmarried couples. On Tuesday, Nov. 4, California, Arizona and Florida superceded the judicial system by each passing a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Is Security Worth the Health Risk?

Treading the green grass of my beautiful college campus, I imagine the tissues of my body slowly heating up and burning away as my body becomes a magnet for the carcinogens from the electromagnetic radiation coming from the roof of Kiely Hall. I am studying within the caustic locale of a device that is supposed to keep Queens College students and faculty safe.

Senioritis: Hardly Working

The Stute, Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ

The first step to curing Senioritis is admitting you have a problem. You know how it goes...

Me:"My name is Matt, and I'm slowly becoming a lazy, self-indulgent college senior."

Group: "Hi, Matt!"

And that would be the high point. Two hours later, after monopolizing the coffee pot and threatening to start my own support group, I'd be out of there.

Tropic Thunder Good For Some Laughs

My first instinct upon seeing the trailer for "Tropic Thunder" was that it was too good to be true. The movie has several big name comedy actors all taking on main roles in the movie including Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., and Matthew McConaughey, not to mention Steve Coogan, Tom Cruise, Nick Nolte, and Bill Hader all making appearances as secondary characters.

Once you feel that faint tickle in your throat, it must be taken care of through rest, liquids, medicine, and other remedies. Taking immediate action can slow the virus down before it gets comfortable in your system. There are a number of ways to prevent sickness, but sometimes no matter how much you try to fend off that cold, it seems to grab hold of you during the most stressful week you have had in months.

Disappointing Attempt to Reach Out to Students

The Pioneer Times, William Paterson University, NJ

5 days ago by Chris Nesi

One of the most significant challenges we faced while creating the election issue was ensuring that various points of view would be equally represented. In keeping with this goal, we made numerous attempts to reach out to members of the William Paterson University community whose point of view is in the minority on campus.

Student Government Association President Dana Etkowicz ('09) promised Drew University many things when she stepped into office last year-including being open and having frequent communication with the Drew community. Corny e-quotes are not inspirational

Every creep worth his salt knows that online networking profiles are great for scoping out hotties. However, many people fail to realize the Internet's role in evaluating potential dolts. Allow me to explain. Have you ever been cut in line and thought immediately that the perpetrator seemed to be the sort to use Comic Sans MS font and type in Caps Lock? This people-evaluating technique also works in the reverse.
